By all the signs we are living the very last years of a world which has no Artificial Intelligence out there widely available helping or even replacing human beings. AI will definitely enable us new technologies, unveil hidden worlds as of today, and hopefully help humanity to not just technologically but to advance spiritually.
Today the very technology which was dreamed up by the children of the ’80s, who had dreams back in their childhood imagining virtual words rich with interactions and a headset or a device with could take them into virtual reality is now the reality of today. We have Oculus Rift, SONY Morpheus, while Steam with HTC, and on the other turf Microsoft is launching similar projects.
In this article I would like to express my opinion on AI in connection with software and video game development and I would like to write about my vision and opinion on how far AI can go and help humanity in creating and maintaining those very important things for many of us.
Nowadays if you say artificial intelligence in connection with video games everybody visualizes an enemy soldier moving cover to cover and firing in between, but today’s AI is rather primitive and based on a pre-written scripting and programming which was done by the creators of the engine and also by the developers of the video game. AI is a very big part of open world games, like Grand Theft Auto, Saints Row, the Elder Scroll series, but you would be quite bored without AI in a Total War game or in Warframe. So AI is very important and the way AI is programmed can greatly improve or it can even hurt the experience.
The birth of Artificial Intelligence
Let’s say that humanity tomorrow comes up with the solution to create a very interactive AI which is situation aware to an extent and has a limited memory. Let’s say that a new Grand Theft Auto VI includes that very AI and you will be able to interact with pedestrians, get new “virtual” friends and enemies. The game experience could be taken to a whole new level. From that moment you would be writing your own story, you didn’t need that many missions or side activities to keep you occupied, you might not play as much GTA Online you would otherwise, because the AI keeps you fed with some kind of an excitement while making you more curious about the world of the game.
It would be even more enjoyable in RPG games, like in The Elder Scrolls where you could create your own story and create new ways to complete quests and find your very own path to the final quest.
The self-aware Artificial Intelligence
If humanity could create a self-aware or at least an intelligent “robot” which could learn, improve itself and solve complex visual problems only by given directions and goals, it would be a remarkable achievement, one that would write itself instantly into history books.
I don’t think that any AI could really help you get a great video game idea, but an AI which is able to learn could help you with creating 3D models, textures, a program or software code, implement for you a crafting system, shape 3D characters, tailor clothes for your characters and create maps and buildings with the best of it.
If you are done with those the AI could also focus on adding content, missions, activities, collectibles, more features, gamemodes, maybe a EXP and level system to your game.
With the help of AI the possibilities are endless, if the AI is powerful and intelligent enough it could create new operation systems within months or just weeks, while the improving or the backward-engineering of those which already exist would take just days or hours. The existence of an intelligent AI would also raise many security concerns and problems which could partly be solved by other AIs or by the very same which has exposed those security problems.
Imagine games with looong story lines while all of those missions are diverse, contains a lot of ideas, content and interactivity (not just like today’s Assassin’s Creed: follow this, kill that, go there, pickpocket that, escape, do it again!), while the game worlds are not just massive and beautiful, but the developers can really make their dreams come alive and create things that are really creative and unique.
Will the jobs be taken away by Artificial Intelligence?
If the video game industry actually utilized the AI it would be a great question what would happen with the programmers, coders, testers and another vast number of educated and talented people. The AI would “empower” the creators so they could create content in a much better quality and quantity. It’s up to the video game industry and the video game developer teams to decide whether they would implement much more content in a single video game or they would go with the amount of content we have seen from them before.
If they chose that they want to create bigger worlds, a longer story line, more mini games, then it would not affect the positions of the current video game developers, but if they would stuck with the same amount of content that they have given before to their customers or they would look at the AI as a “replacement” of expensive colleagues and a way to cut video game development budgets, it would shake the whole industry and make many talented developers jobless.
If we are talking about the software industry where they are creating software for particular purposes and implementing particular features, AI could make companies to employ potentially less people with lower wages, and ultimately software companies would be much more interested in new ideas and solutions rather than experienced coders and educated individuals.
Will it replace human beings or help human beings making their dreams come true?
I don’t believe that there is a way to ban or rpevent AI from developing software or video games in the future, it’s entirely up to the video game companies, investors, publishers, developer teams, the people who are using and actually buying expensive software and the gamers how AI will shape the future and the lives of other fellow human beings.
